PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Solarize808 is an initiative consisting of Hui O Hau’ula, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), and Solar Crowdsource (SCS) with support from other stakeholders.

We believe in the core value of ‘aina aloha: a deep and abiding love for Hawaii’s communities and natural environments.  We are of and from this ‘aina that ultimately sustains us.  We employ strategies for economic development that place our kuleana to steward precious, limited resources in a manner that ensures our long-term horizon as a viable island people and place -  ‘ainaalohafutures.com

We recognize that climate change is creating a future with new challenges and difficulties, requiring the development of solutions grounded in principles of resiliency, sustainability, and the Hawaiian concept of ‘aina aloha, or beloved homeland.

The goals of the Solarize808 program are:

  1. Making solar energy more affordable: lower the cost of solar energy through the power of group-purchasing and reduced acquisition costs. Deliver attractive, low-cost, and long-term solar lease and PPA products to LMI customers on Oahu, including those that may be credit-challenged
  2. Making solar energy more accessible: achieve high penetration of solar for LMI communities to ensure a more equitable distribution of the benefits of going solar; predetermined, highly-vetted materials, pricing, and contractor(s) through a competitive bid process;
  3. Education and community engagement: widespread community engagement, education and outreach activities through town hall meetings, workshops, solar “open house” gatherings, and outreach through local community groups and events, and;
  4. Promoting solar-positive policies: encourage local governments to adopt streamlined solar energy permitting policies and fair utility distributed generation policies. Advance greenhouse gas reduction goals, clean-energy production, workforce development opportunities, and other community policy objectives.
